This work introduces the origins of writing on international space law and its early development. Beginning with legal works early in the 20th century, this work traces developing literature, organizational formation, and gradually increasing international cooperation in the development of international space law. The decade of the 1950's was a period of gradually increasing international cooperation in astronautics. This work describes relevant activities in that decade. It also traces origins of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) and describes the backdrop of the early development of the International Astronautical Federation, listing all meetings of both organizations held from 1950 to 2002. The study then describes the purposes, programs, roles, and structure of the IISL, and includes Annexes containing membership rosters, history of Institute awards given, and the Institute's current Statutes and Bylaws.
